What is Fine Needle Biopsy?Fine Needle Biopsy (FNB) is a procedure performed by a specialist trained in FNB procurement to identify the medical meaning of a “worrisome lump” or “nodule” under the skin or anywhere in the body. Cytopathologists are doctors whose specialties include interpreting the health or disease state of cells by their appearance. How is a Fine Needle Biopsy performed?Using a fine (small) needle attached to a syringe, the physician takes a tiny sample of cells, spreads them on a microscope slide, and stains them. The cytopathologist then examines the specimen microscopically and issues a diagnosis. Before the FNB takes place, are there any pre-op preparations I must make? No, none at all. Will the doctor “put me to sleep” for the procedure? No, you will be fully awake during the procedure because a local anesthetic is used. Is Fine Needle Biopsy painful? It is about as painful as “a little rubber band snap.” The doctor numbs the surrounding skin with Lidocaine. Of the several methods available for taking biopsies, Fine Needle Biopsy is the most pain-free procedure. How long does the procedure take? The actual sampling of the lump is completed in moments. An additional 30 minutes are spent with the physician as he or she describes the procedure and answers any questions you may have. When will I learn of the results of my Fine Needle Biopsy? The cytopathologist will usually inform you of the preliminary findings before you leave. After the FNB has been performed, are there any side effects? The sampled area may be slightly swollen and tender for a day or two. About 1 in 10 patients experiences a small bruise similar to the kind that can occur when blood is drawn. When can I resume my routine activities?Immediately. Nothing about the procedure interferes with your ability to perform normally. How will I be billed?DCL’s clerical staff will file all insurance claims on your behalf following the procedure. If you do not have insurance, DCL will establish a payment plan for your convenience. Your DCL Pathologists are:
